Synthesis Solutions
Heptane is a straight-chain alkane which has many isomers and which forms the part of longer chemical formula sequences. As a non-polar solvent, heptane is widely used in laboratories for chemical research or processes. However, as a liquid, it is ideal for the transportation and storage of other chemicals like fuel. Heptane is also widely commercially available as mixed isomers for common usage in paints and coatings, rubber cement solvents, fuel for outdoor stoves, and, in its purest form, for the research and development of pharmaceutical manufacturing as well as being a minor component in gasoline. While heptane has many useful functions and is safe to use and handle when applied to with proper chemical handling safety procedures, there are still many health risks associated with exposure or mishandling of heptane that are important to keep in mind. For example, some of the health risks associated with misuse or harmful exposure to heptane include dizziness, incoordination, loss of appetite, nausea, dermatitis, and even loss of consciousness.
